School of Public Health Scientist William Edmands dies at 34

William EdmandsDr. William Edmands, a scientist in the School of Public Health who had been considered an important contributor to the field of metabolomics, died Friday, June 30. He was 34.

Dr. Edmands began work at UC Berkeley in 2014 as a postdoctoral researcher in School of Public Health Professor Stephen Rappaport’s biomarkers research group. In 2016, he was promoted to the position of project scientist.

His research focused on bioinformatics for metabolomics and proteomics.

“Will was a creative, thoughtful, and skilled scientist who was dedicated to applying bioinformatics to uncover causes of human disease. Our thoughts are with his family,” said Stefano Bertozzi, dean of the School.

Dr. Edmands earned his bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees from Imperial College London.

A memorial will be held in his honor Friday, July 21 at the UC Berkeley Women’s Faculty Club.
